Courses
Sky Village will be a place of learning in more ways than one.
Our Research Centre will be home to post-graduate researchers and students who will use our World-class facilities to conduct cutting-edge scientific research into the Universe.
For amateur astronomers, there will be a wide range of courses throughout the year, each taught by a specialist with years of experience in their subject.
These will range from the basics of astronomy, right up to advanced topics. Here are some examples:
Astro Camp
Specifically aimed at 9-15 year olds, Astro Camp seeks to inspire and inform young people who are already interested in science and technology. It will open up the wonders of both the Universe and space technology though a range of engaging experiments and activities. Don’t expect classroom teaching here – this is a hands-on, full-throttle whirlwind tour of Space and Space Science. Culminating in the launch of an atmospheric rocket or weather balloon, this one goes literally to the edge of Space itself.
Astronomy Basics
A classroom-taught astronomy course, Astronomy Basics is a week-long course aimed at adults who are new to astronomy. In an easily digestible format, Astronomy Basics delivers the theory during a two hour morning session, then it’s time to relax and absorb before an evening observing session. Covering everything from the workings of the Solar System to the equipment used to view it, expect a complete introduction that will increase your confidence as an astronomer.
Beginners Astrophotography
It’s no exaggeration to say that astrophotography is one of the toughest aspects of astronomy – but also one of the most rewarding. To the daunted beginner though, it can seem an impossible hill to climb to get good results. Our course changes all that by breaking the subject up into bite-sized chunks over five days, with plenty of observatory time to really get to grips with each aspect of this complex art. All equipment is supplied.
Advanced Astrophotography
For those who are already well versed in the basics, this course is an entirely hands-on one aimed at improving your results. Starting in the observatories with advanced techniques taught by seasoned astrophotographers, the course also includes daytime sessions focused on image processing to help you get the very best out of your data.
